We carry out chimney repairs, re-leading, rebuilds and chimney removal across Liverpool and Merseyside: Liverpool itself, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and the Wirral, plus Widnes. Find your district below, or call 07777 659786 if your town is not listed.

Liverpool

Within the city, the type of chimney depends a lot on the street. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Anfield, Walton, Everton and Kensington commonly have brick stacks shared between neighbours, often with rear chimneys on the back extensions as well. Further south, Wavertree and Toxteth have a similar mix of terraced rows and larger period houses.

The bigger villas of Aigburth, Mossley Hill and Allerton tend to have tall stacks with several pots, where access is a large part of any job. In the east of the city, inter-war semis in Old Swan and West Derby often share a central stack between two houses. Down by the river, Garston has a mix of older terraces and later housing.

Sefton

In Bootle, rows of terraced houses with shared stacks are common. Along the coast, Crosby and Waterloo take the full force of wind and rain off the sea, which wears pointing and lifts lead faster than on sheltered streets. Crosby also has larger Victorian houses with tall stacks.

Knowsley

Huyton and Prescot have plenty of inter-war and later semis where one stack serves both houses, so a repair or removal usually needs both owners on board.

St Helens

We cover St Helens and the surrounding area, where semi-detached houses with a shared central stack are again common alongside older terraces.

Wirral

Across the Mersey, Birkenhead has many Victorian terraces with brick stacks, while Wallasey, including New Brighton, is exposed to coastal weather that is hard on chimneys.

Other places we cover

The list above is not complete. We also work in places such as Tuebrook, Fairfield, Litherland, Seaforth, Rock Ferry and Rainhill, and in Widnes. If you are not sure whether we cover your street, call and ask.

What do chimneys across Merseyside have in common?

Wherever you are, most of the stacks we see are brick, many of them well over a century old, and they fail in similar ways. Pointing erodes and lets rain soak into the brickwork. Flaunching cracks and loosens the pots. Lead flashings lift or split, and old cement fillets crack away from the stack. Disused flues that were sealed solid when a fireplace was blocked up can trap moisture and cause damp on the chimney breast inside, even with no leak at all. The repair depends on what the inspection shows, not on the postcode, but knowing the local housing helps us anticipate what we are likely to find and what access will be needed.

Does where you live change the job?

Often, yes. Shared stacks mean talking to your neighbour, and sometimes the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 applies. Tight terraced streets may need scaffold on the pavement, which can need a council licence. Exposed coastal stacks may need more robust lead work and pointing. If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, check with the council before changes such as removing a stack. Wherever you are, the starting point is the same: an inspection, a clear explanation and a written quote.
