In Prescot, L34 and L35, we repair chimneys on older town-centre houses and terraces as well as inter-war and later semis with shared central stacks. Leaks, weathered brick, loose pots and the odd unstable stack are the main issues. We inspect carefully, explain the cause and options with photos and send a written quote.
Older buildings in the town
Prescot is a historic town, and some of its buildings are considerably older than the surrounding suburbs. Older chimneys may have softer bricks and mortar, decorative details or unusual flue arrangements. Repairs on these need a gentle approach: a mortar no harder than the brick, reclaimed or closely matched bricks where replacements are needed, and care to keep the original look. Parts of the town may be in a conservation area or include listed buildings, so check with Knowsley Council before agreeing changes to a chimney’s appearance, height or pots.
Semis and their shared stacks
Away from the centre, inter-war and post-war semis are common, each pair sharing a stack on the ridge. These stacks tend to fail at the top first: flaunching cracks, pots loosen, then the lead at the roof line begins to let water in. Because the stack is shared, it is usually best to arrange the repair with your neighbour so both halves are sorted together.
Repair or rebuild?
We make the call after a close inspection. Here is roughly how it goes:
- RepointThe stack is straight and sound but joints have eroded. See chimney repointing.
- Re-leadThe leak is at the roof line where lead or a fillet has failed. See lead flashing repair.
- Rebed and capThe pots are loose or flues are open and unused.
- RebuildThe top is loose, the stack leans or cracks run right through. See chimney rebuilds.
Damp that is not a leak
Some damp patches on chimney breasts have nothing to do with rain. A fireplace sealed without a vent can cause condensation in the flue, and old breasts can contain salts that pull moisture from the air. Fixing the stack alone will not solve either. We look at the inside as well as the outside, and tell you honestly if the problem lies elsewhere.
If a stack is leaning, cracked through or dropping masonry, keep people clear of the area beneath and call us. Please do not go onto the roof.
Flues still in use
If you still light an open fire or use a stove or gas fire, tell us when you call. A working flue needs the right cowl or terminal for the appliance, and the stack top has to be repaired without obstructing it. We do not sweep chimneys, so for open fires and stoves please use a qualified chimney sweep, and for gas appliances a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Frequently asked questions
My chimney breast is cracked on the inside. Is it serious?
Fine cracks in old plaster are common and often cosmetic. Wider cracks, cracks that are growing, or cracks alongside a sagging ceiling or a removed breast below need checking promptly. Tell us what you see and we can advise whether a structural engineer should look too.
Can you match old bricks on an older Prescot house?
We try to. Sound original bricks can often be reused, and we look for the closest match in colour, size and texture for replacements. On older buildings that matters for appearance.
Do you need access through my house?
Often we need to see inside briefly to look at the chimney breast. The repair itself is usually done from outside on scaffold or a platform. On terraces with no rear access, we explain how scaffold will be arranged.
Is it worth repointing just one side of a stack?
Sometimes. If only the weather-facing side has worn, targeted repointing can make sense while access is up. If the other sides are close behind, doing them at the same time may be better value. We show you the condition of each face.
