Most chimney repairs in Walton are on terraced houses in L4 and L9 where water is getting in at the flashing, through worn pointing or past a loose pot. Many homes have two stacks, a main one on the party wall and a smaller one above the rear addition, and both need attention over time. We inspect first, then quote in writing with photos of what we found.

The two chimneys on a typical Walton terrace

The main stack

The front or central stack is usually tall enough to catch the wind and is often shared with the house next door. It tends to suffer from eroded pointing on its exposed faces and from failing flaunching, the mortar slope that holds the pots in place. When flaunching cracks, rain runs straight down beside the pots and into the masonry.

The rear-addition stack

Smaller stacks over back kitchens and bathrooms meet the roof at awkward angles, sometimes where a back slope joins a wall. These junctions rely on lead or, in many older repairs, a cement fillet that cracks as the building moves. A damp ceiling in a back room is often traced to one of these.

What usually goes wrong

What you notice Likely area to check
Stain on ceiling next to the breast Side or front flashing, cement fillet
Damp high up on the breast after storms Flaunching, open or uncapped pots
Damp patch spreading across the whole breast Porous brick, worn pointing, or salts in old plaster
Mortar crumbs in the yard Pointing or flaunching breaking up

The table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Water travels through brick, so the stain inside can sit some distance from the fault outside. That is why we inspect before we recommend anything.

Which repair fits?

Where flashing is the problem we replace it with new lead dressed into the brick joints, which is a far more durable fix than another strip of cement; our page on chimney flashing repair goes into detail. Worn joints call for raking out and repointing the stack. A pot that has worked loose may simply need rebedding in fresh flaunching, and a flue you no longer use can be capped with a vented cowl from our pots and cowls range of work.

Where a rear stack serves nothing and keeps leaking, taking it down below the roofline and re-roofing over the opening can be the most lasting answer. Our chimney stack removal page explains what that involves.

If you see a stack leaning or dropping bricks onto the pavement or into the back entry, keep people away from that area and call us. Please do not go up a ladder to look.

Covering Walton and the streets around it

Walton sits between Anfield and Bootle, with very similar housing, so the same approach applies across the area. You can read about our wider chimney repair service or browse chimney and roof repairs in Liverpool to see how we work elsewhere in the city.

Frequently asked questions

Is the little chimney over my back kitchen worth keeping?

If nothing uses it and it keeps causing trouble, removing it below the roofline and re-roofing over the gap can be a sensible option. If a flue in it is still live, or it is shared, it needs repairing instead. We explain both routes, and point out any council checks if your street is in a conservation area.

Why does water come through the kitchen ceiling only when it rains hard from one direction?

Driving rain on one face of a stack can soak porous brick or get behind a cracked fillet that stays dry in lighter weather. A blocked back gutter behind the stack can also overflow only in heavy downpours. We check the faces and junctions before deciding which repair fits.

Can you tell if the gas fire flue is affected?

We will ask whether any appliance uses the flue and note what we see at the pot and cowl. Checking the appliance and flue performance is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, so if anything looks wrong at the top we will tell you to get it checked before using it.

How long will scaffolding be up on a Walton terrace?

It depends on the repair and the weather. A straightforward flashing or pointing job on a two-storey house is normally short; rebuilds take longer. We give you an honest idea once we have inspected, and we keep scaffold up only as long as the work needs.
